Reflecting On 2010 As a Business Owner

As 2010 comes to a close i wanted to reflect on this year as a business owner. I'm sure many can relate to this and i hope you enjoy!

Going into 2010 i was very excited! I had a great successful year in 2009 and i just knew it was going to be a repeat! Boy did i have a rude awakening! I was on a natural high from the wonderful new years party i had with an attendance of over 400 people, i was saying to myself oh this is a piece of cake! I started the year off with vol.2 of Speak Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace relationship forum.. Great crowd but of coarse i wanted my events to improve. I continued to step out the box with my other events such as the wine tastings, sex, sassy,& classy, my debut of desire desserts vol. 1 & 2, business mingles, spades tournament, and how can we forget two speed dating events! While all this was going on i continued my weekly radio show great minds think alike, book club Imaginable Minds, and continued with my catering services.

Through all of this i was still miserable because my numbers at my events continued to be low. I was beating myself up saying: what is wrong, what am i doing wrong? I got more frustrated with losing money, meeting unprofessional and trifling people, staying up late, working long hours, tears, fear, other mix emotions, and also dealing with my job that i truly hate! My breaking point was when i planned my second dessert tasting. I was thinking this event is going to be easy because the first one was great and the attendance was great! Again i was wrong when it came to planning! I struggled to get vendors, people were telling me it wasn't a good idea, a waste of time, people wouldn't come, the list goes on and on! I wanted to cancel the event so bad but God kept telling me no don't quit, this is a great and excellent event.  I went from 3 vendors to 10 vendors in 2 days. Everything went great and overall i was happy with the event!

As i end 2010 i must say this has been a very rough year but i want to let everyone know i'm a living witness not to give up! The sleepless nights, constant work, loosing money, dealing with positive and negative situations is all worth it! The situations i have been through and continue to go through has taught me to become a better person. Like Tyler Perry Says: Pray, Have Faith & Believe!

See you in 2011!

  1. It really does come with the territory of running your own business. It's not easy and that's why so many businesses fail within the first year. It takes determination, dedication and missed sleep. Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

  3. I believe success comes from not only being consistent but by being around like minded people. I am always inspired when I am in your company because you are a go getter. You have inspired me to be more enterprising in 2011 and continue to pursue my dreams. I think Raleigh is becoming a place of the comfortable adult and a college town. I know you will find the right market that will love your products and your business will continue to grow. Continued success in 2011, Enterprising minds think alike.

The big businesses are shutting down such as Sam's Club and Toys R US, so imagine what the small business owners are going through! I write this blog today to the small business owners to say don't give up! I know as you are reading this you are saying "easier said than done" but i'm a living witness that you have to keep going! Selections Entertainment is in year 9 and there are many days I want to give up but I say to myself "look how far you have came, what you have accomplished and how you have helped others. Take your business day by day, challenge yourself, ask yourself what you can do different, and how can you meet  and network with different people to build working relationships and build clientele. Also work on supporting other businesses!. The struggle is real but pray, have faith, and believe, you will get through the rough patches. I don...

Budget Wisely!

Many brides are overwhelmed when they are planning a wedding. Many couples have estimated budgets for their special day but many don't plan a realistic budget. The best way to establish a realistic budget is to have a budget in each category. Hire a professional wedding planner to help you with your budget. A planner will let a couple know what is the average cost of a vendor in each category. People are very surprise how much a caterer, florist, or photographer cost in their area. The guessing game of expenses will cause a couple to overspend and become overwhelmed. A planner can also help you with saving money on do's and don't's. Their professional vendor list will help you plan your special day! Happy Planning!

Yes you will get a lot of wedding vendors who will contact you but enjoy the moment and take it all in! Many people don't enjoy the engagement process and they rush with planning and get overwhelmed! Wedding vendors let engaged couples enjoy the moment and take your time with promotions and pushing your services.
